Radiohead's "15 Step"

What propelled Radiohead’s performance of “15 Step” to a higher plane than the other Grammy performances? Is it Yorke’s brilliance as a performer? Is it having the BBC composer in residence as your co-conspirator on guitar? Is it the juxtaposition of a marching band with a rock band? Is it the 5/4 signature or the arranger David Campbell taking on the huge musical space? Looking at other more modest but similarly compelling performances on youtube, perhaps it’s always simply the song’s unsettling lyrics delivered in an equally unsettling and convincing musical and choreographic way, with dramatic changes in feeling that fit seamlessly together, like our modern consciousness, brilliantly produced (go techs) on this occasion at the heart of mass culture.
